About this Work

Wallace was one of the original members of Exile One, the Dominican band that Gordon Henderson assembled in Guadeloupe in the early 1970s and that changed Caribbean music permanently. His role was bass and chorus, which understates it considerably.

In a band built around synthesizers, a full horn section, and Henderson's voice, Wallace's bass was the thread that held the whole architecture together. Exile One went on to sign with Barclay Records, the first Creole act to land a major French label deal, and sent cadence-lypso across the Caribbean, into Europe, Africa, Japan, and the Indian Ocean islands. The bands and sounds that came after, Kassav, zouk, a generation of French Antillean music, trace a direct line back to what Exile One built, and Wallace was there from the beginning.

Meet the Artist

Waitukubuli Artists Association

The Waitukubuli Artist Association (WAA) was founded in Dominica in 2017 by master artist Earl Etienne and Craig Steadman of DEXIA, in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. What began as a small gathering of visual artists has grown into a community of over 90 members — painters, sculptors, photographers, poets, performers, and more .

Volunteer-run and currently led by filmmaker and photographer Michael Lees, WAA has produced large-scale public murals, staged exhibitions across Dominica, and built mentorship programs for emerging artists. Eight years on, the association remains the island's primary collective voice for the visual arts.
