About this Work

Marcel "Co" Mark and his brother Phillip "Chubby" Mark built the Midnight Groovers out of Grand Bay in the early 1970s, and for fifty years the band has been the sound most closely associated with the rootsy, village-facing side of cadence-lypso.

Where other Dominican bands chased the Guadeloupe stages and the French Antillean record labels, the Midnight Groovers stayed connected to the Kwéyòl-speaking working class at home, building a catalog of songs heavy on social commentary, workers' dignity, and the texture of ordinary Dominican life. That commitment is what earned them their reputation, not just as musicians but as keepers of something the island could lose.

Meet the Artist

Waitukubuli Artists Association

The Waitukubuli Artist Association (WAA) was founded in Dominica in 2017 by master artist Earl Etienne and Craig Steadman of DEXIA, in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. What began as a small gathering of visual artists has grown into a community of over 90 members — painters, sculptors, photographers, poets, performers, and more .

Volunteer-run and currently led by filmmaker and photographer Michael Lees, WAA has produced large-scale public murals, staged exhibitions across Dominica, and built mentorship programs for emerging artists. Eight years on, the association remains the island's primary collective voice for the visual arts.
