About this Work

Year 1938
Location Caribbean

A companion plate to the mango tree scene, and every bit as charming. Here Jeanne-Marie is on the move — arms spread wide for balance, a loaded fruit basket riding perfectly atop her head — while a younger child sits at the base of a palm tree watching her with obvious admiration. A couple of chickens scatter in the middle ground, adding a note of comic chaos.

It's a classic Caribbean image: the head-carried basket, the red-earthed path, the coconut palms. Fleur renders it with the same affectionate looseness as the rest of the series — expressive faces, confident linework, color laid in with a light hand. The red ribbons in Jeanne-Marie's pigtails are a small recurring detail that ties the plates together nicely.
