Artist Profile

Anne Elizabeth Fleur

Anne Elizabeth Fleur was an American illustrator associated with mid-20th-century children’s books. Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1901, she studied at St. Joseph’s School and Lancaster Business School before pursuing art more seriously. After private study at home, she moved to New York City, where she attended the Art Students League, a major training ground for American artists and illustrators.

Fleur began her professional life in advertising, a field that likely sharpened her sense of visual clarity, composition, and character. Over time, her interest in drawing children became central to her work and helped guide her toward books for young readers. Her illustrations often belonged to the world of nursery tales, childhood adventure, fairy-tale subjects, and gentle narrative scenes.

She worked under several names, including Anne Fleur and Anne Elizabeth, but one of her most important professional names was the pseudonym Sari. Under that name, she illustrated Jeanne-Marie Goes to Market: A Story of the West Indies, published by Grosset & Dunlap in 1938. The Sari name is also connected to other children’s book work and archival holdings.

Today, Fleur’s surviving record is modest, but meaningful. The de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection at the University of Southern Mississippi holds the Sari Papers, which include ink illustrations created by Anne Elizabeth Fleur between 1951 and 1952 for books by Christine Noble Govan. Together, these traces point to an artist whose career was rooted in warmth, storytelling, and the visual world of childhood.
