About this Work

The most kinetic plate in the series. Jeanne-Marie — red-ribboned pigtails, red-striped dress — strides alongside a tall woman carrying a tray of live chickens on her head, the procession stretching back along the road with more market-goers behind them, each loaded with baskets of fruit. Everyone is moving, everything is full.

Fleur's draftsmanship is at its most confident here. The central woman's plaid dress sweeps dramatically as she walks, and the receding line of figures gives the composition real depth and rhythm. The palette is the brightest of the set — reds, yellows, blues, and greens layered in loose hatching that catches the warmth of a Caribbean morning.
