About this Work

Brunias's most expansive Caribbean scene, and arguably his masterpiece. Some thirty figures fill a busy market square, with sea and mountains visible in the distance and colonial buildings anchoring the right — a composition that somehow never feels cluttered.

At the center, two elegantly dressed free women of color inspect fabric at the linen stall, their white muslin gowns and coral-trimmed fichus marking them as the social focal point. Around them the market hums: a seated vendor presides over her stall, pineapples and melons are spread across the ground, a Carib man with feathered hat stands at left, children weave through the crowd in the background.

What Brunias captures isn't just what people wore or sold, but how they occupied space together — the social choreography of a free Caribbean market day.

Meet the Artist

Agostino Brunias

Agostino Brunias was a Roman-born painter who trained at the Accademia di San Luca before making his way to England, where he worked under architect Robert Adam. In 1764 he left London for the British West Indies, eventually settling in Dominica, where he spent much of the rest of his life. His paintings and engravings of Caribbean creole culture and indigenous Carib life remain among the most significant visual records of 18th-century West Indian society.
