About this Work

Year 1938
Location Caribbean

A warm, storybook scene full of small delights. A young girl sits cross-legged beneath a laden mango tree, laughing and holding a piece of fruit aloft — a monkey perches in the branches above her, and two small birds flutter nearby, the whole thing feeling like a moment of pure, uncomplicated joy.

Fleur's crayon and pencil technique suits the subject perfectly. The linework is loose and affectionate, the color added in light washes of yellow, teal, and terracotta that glow against the aged paper. The rolling landscape behind hints at a Caribbean hillside, and the bordered composition gives it the feel of a beloved book plate — which it almost certainly was.

There's a genuine lightness here that's hard to manufacture. The girl, the monkey, the mangoes, the birds — it all hangs together with the easy charm of an illustrator who understood her audience and clearly enjoyed the work.
