About this Work

Year 1962
Location Caribbean

A companion plate to PL2, and just as assured. Here Stirnweis pulls the camera back, giving us a lone figure wade-fishing in shallow Caribbean waters, cast net mid-throw, with a low-lying island shore stretching across the horizon and a leaning coconut palm framing the right edge of the composition.

The two-color palette — the same warm charcoal linework against flat turquoise — does a lot of work here. The open water dominates, and Stirnweis leans into it, letting the teal breathe while his loose, textured mark-making suggests the ripple of shallow water and the rustling of palm fronds overhead. It's a quieter image than PL2, more about place than action.

Cast net fishing was — and remains — a traditional practice throughout the Caribbean, and the scene has an everyday, unhurried quality that feels observed rather than staged. As a pair with PL2, the two prints capture the rhythm of island life from two different vantage points: one high in the trees, one standing in the sea.
