About this Work

Year 1962
Location Caribbean

A breezy, sun-drenched illustration in Stirnweis's characteristically confident mid-century style. A young figure perches high in a coconut palm, drinking straight from a freshly cracked coconut against a flat turquoise sky — the kind of image that makes you feel the heat and the salt air without trying too hard.

Rendered in just two colors — warm charcoal linework over a vivid teal ground — the composition has real graphic punch. The fronds fan out across the picture plane with loose, energetic draftsmanship, and the figure is handled with the easy naturalism Stirnweis brought to his editorial and book illustration work throughout the 1950s and 60s.

Originally produced as a plate illustration for educational publishing on Caribbean life and culture, it sits comfortably at the intersection of fine illustration and documentary intent — informative in origin, but genuinely appealing as a standalone image.
