About this Work

Year 1816
Location Jamaica

Woman Beating Cassava, Jamaica by William Berryman offers a quiet glimpse into daily life in early nineteenth-century Jamaica. With delicate pencil lines and soft washes of color, the scene captures a woman at work beneath a simple open shelter, surrounded by baskets, birds, and the textures of rural life. The composition feels intimate and observant, balancing documentary detail with a gentle sense of atmosphere. It is a thoughtful piece for collectors drawn to Caribbean history, everyday labor, and understated works on paper.

Meet the Artist

William Berryman

William Berryman was an English artist who spent nearly a decade in Jamaica, from 1808 to 1816, producing over three hundred pencil sketches and watercolors of the island's landscape and people. Where many of his contemporaries looked past the lives of the enslaved, Berryman trained his eye directly on them. He never lived to see his work published, but it survives today as one of the most intimate visual records of early 19th-century Jamaica.
