About this Work

Year 1962
Location Caribbean

Pure energy on paper. Three musicians fill the frame — a banjo player at left, a triangle player center, and a larger figure at right mid-dance, decorated sash across his chest and straw hat pushed back on his head — all of them clearly mid-performance and enjoying every second of it.

Stirnweis drops the teal of the other plates here, working in straight black and white, and the result is looser and more immediate. The figures are cropped close and pushed right up to the picture plane, which gives the composition an almost cinematic energy — you're in the crowd, not watching from a distance. The linework is freer than in PL2 and PL20, sketchier, which suits the subject perfectly.

A triangle, a banjo, and a dancer in a decorated costume — it reads as a carnival or festival scene, the kind of street music that was and remains central to Caribbean cultural life.
