About this Work

El Pandero y El Malojero by Pierre Toussaint Frédéric Mialhe captures a busy street scene in nineteenth-century Havana. Vendors, laborers and mounted figures move through an open square as goods are carried, horses are fed and daily business unfolds beneath the towers of a nearby church.

The title refers to two familiar urban trades: the panadero, or bread seller, and the malojero, who sold maloja, a type of fresh fodder used to feed horses and other livestock. Mialhe places these working figures at the center of the composition, surrounding them with baskets, bundles, animals and passersby that convey the rhythm of city life.
