Valla de Gallos by Pierre Toussaint Frédéric Mialhe captures the charged atmosphere of a nineteenth-century Cuban cockfighting arena. Spectators crowd the wooden galleries, leaning over railings, gesturing and reacting as two birds face one another in the ring below. The tightly packed composition gives the scene a strong sense of noise, movement and anticipation.

Originally produced as a colour lithograph, the work offers a detailed view of a popular but controversial form of public entertainment in colonial Cuba. Mialhe carefully records the architecture of the arena, the dress of the spectators and the social mix of the crowd, turning the scene into a vivid document of its time.

Pierre Toussaint Frederic Mialhe

Pierre Toussaint Frédéric Mialhe was a French painter, draughtsman and lithographer best known for his detailed views of nineteenth-century Cuba. Born in Bordeaux, he travelled to Havana in 1838 and spent approximately fifteen years documenting the island’s landscapes, cities, architecture and everyday life. His widely circulated lithographs became an important visual record of colonial Cuba and helped shape how the island was represented internationally.
