Cercanías de Baracoa by Pierre Toussaint Frédéric Mialhe presents a dramatic journey through the dense tropical landscape surrounding Baracoa, Cuba. Travellers move along a narrow forest road on horseback and by ox, while a runner leads the way through towering trees, palms and thick vegetation.

The scene combines movement with a strong sense of scale. Mialhe’s monumental tree trunks dominate the composition, making the figures appear small within the lush Caribbean interior. Rich greens, warm earth tones and flashes of red give the work a vivid, almost theatrical quality.

Pierre Toussaint Frederic Mialhe

Pierre Toussaint Frédéric Mialhe was a French painter, draughtsman and lithographer best known for his detailed views of nineteenth-century Cuba. Born in Bordeaux, he travelled to Havana in 1838 and spent approximately fifteen years documenting the island’s landscapes, cities, architecture and everyday life. His widely circulated lithographs became an important visual record of colonial Cuba and helped shape how the island was represented internationally.
