About this Work

One of Brunias's earliest Caribbean subjects, and already fully formed in its sympathies. A flower seller — a common and recognizable figure in the street life of the colonial West Indies — anchors the composition, accompanied by two other free women of color in the layered, carefully assembled dress that Brunias would return to again and again throughout his career.

The flower trade was one of the few independent economic activities readily available to free women in this world, and Brunias treats his subject with the same dignity he brought to more formally dressed figures. Painted around 1769, it predates much of his later Dominican work and offers a glimpse of the visual language he was already developing — an eye for fabric, adornment, and the social textures of Caribbean life that no other painter of the period came close to matching.

Meet the Artist

Agostino Brunias

Agostino Brunias was a Roman-born painter who trained at the Accademia di San Luca before making his way to England, where he worked under architect Robert Adam. In 1764 he left London for the British West Indies, eventually settling in Dominica, where he spent much of the rest of his life. His paintings and engravings of Caribbean creole culture and indigenous Carib life remain among the most significant visual records of 18th-century West Indian society.
