About this Work

Another work from Brunias's Caribbean years, this oil depicts a Carib family outside a thatched dwelling, likely on Dominica or St. Vincent. Four figures are arranged with quiet naturalism — two women adorned with beaded necklaces, red feather ornaments, and woven apron skirts; a man smoking a pipe, his long hair tied back; and a young child nursing at its mother's knee.

Brunias brought the same observational care here that distinguished his paintings of free Black Creoles — a genuine interest in dress, adornment, and daily life rather than mere spectacle. The red featherwork, shell jewelry, and woven beadwork are rendered with ethnographic precision, making the painting a valuable document of Carib material culture in the late 18th century.

The lush tropical foliage and the palm-thatched structure ground the scene firmly in place, giving the whole composition an unhurried, lived-in feeling.

Meet the Artist

Agostino Brunias

Agostino Brunias was a Roman-born painter who trained at the Accademia di San Luca before making his way to England, where he worked under architect Robert Adam. In 1764 he left London for the British West Indies, eventually settling in Dominica, where he spent much of the rest of his life. His paintings and engravings of Caribbean creole culture and indigenous Carib life remain among the most significant visual records of 18th-century West Indian society.
