A market in full swing on the streets of Roseau, circa 1780. Women in white muslin and striped madras trade linen across a table while a child drums nearby and produce spills across the foreground. Brunias painted Dominica's free Creole women as the center of economic and social life, which they were.

The capital's market days were where the island's complex social world made itself visible, and he looked at it with more sustained attention than any other artist of his era.

Meet the Artist

Agostino Brunias

Agostino Brunias was a Roman-born painter who trained at the Accademia di San Luca before making his way to England, where he worked under architect Robert Adam. In 1764 he left London for the British West Indies, eventually settling in Dominica, where he spent much of the rest of his life. His paintings and engravings of Caribbean creole culture and indigenous Carib life remain among the most significant visual records of 18th-century West Indian society.
