About this Work

A West Indian Boy by Henry Scott Tuke presents a quiet, intimate study of a young Caribbean sitter. Rather than surrounding the figure with a complex narrative, Tuke directs attention to the boy’s expression, posture and presence, giving the portrait a sense of stillness and individuality.

Soft modelling, restrained color and loose, confident brushwork reflect Tuke’s sensitivity to natural light. The simplicity of the composition allows the warmth of the sitter’s skin and the subtle shifts in tone to become the focus of the work.

Created in connection with Tuke’s 1923–1924 journey through Jamaica and the wider Caribbean, the portrait belongs to a distinctive group of works inspired by the people, waterways and brilliant tropical light he encountered during the trip.
