Winslow Homer

Artist Profile

Winslow Homer

Winslow Homer was an American painter, printmaker, and watercolorist, widely regarded as one of the most important figures in 19th-century American art. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1836, Homer grew up in Cambridge and showed artistic talent from an early age. His mother, a gifted amateur watercolorist, was his first teacher and remained an important influence throughout his life.

Homer began his career as a commercial lithographer and illustrator, producing images for publications such as Harper’s Weekly. During the American Civil War, he worked as an artist-correspondent, sketching soldiers, camps, and scenes from the front. These experiences helped shape his transition from illustrator to painter, leading to major works such as Home, Sweet Home and Prisoners from the Front.

Though largely self-taught, Homer developed a mature and highly personal style marked by clear composition, emotional restraint, and close attention to nature. He painted scenes of rural life, childhood, Reconstruction-era America, working people, and, most famously, the sea. His time in Cullercoats, England, and later at Prouts Neck, Maine, deepened his interest in coastal life and the struggle between human beings and the forces of nature.

Homer also became one of America’s greatest watercolorists, producing vivid works during travels to Gloucester, the Adirondacks, Florida, Cuba, the Bahamas, and other Caribbean locations. In later life, his seascapes grew increasingly dramatic and elemental, securing his reputation as a profoundly original American artist. He died in 1910 at his Prouts Neck studio.
